Wewahitchka Real Estate and Outdoor Living in Florida’s Apalachicola River Basin
Where the bass are big, the trees are ancient, and the sunsets are golden.
The city of Wewahitchka, situated in the Apalachicola River basin, is world-renowned for two distinctive features: Dead Lakes and Tupelo honey. Dead Lakes is a hotspot for freshwater fishing and an enchanting panorama for nature photography. Tupelo honey is prized for its unique buttery flavor and smooth texture.
Scientists believe that centuries ago, sandbars shaped by the Apalachicola River’s current obstructed the Chipola River, resulting in high water levels that killed thousands of trees in the floodplain and created a graveyard of bottom-heavy cypress skeletons, stumps and knees. Bass anglers frequently visit this region to catch elusive “lunkers” hiding near underwater structure, while nature photographers, artists and other outdoor enthusiasts strive to capture the amazing beauty of its unique waters.
The rugged beauty of this region was showcased in the 1997 Oscar-winning film “Ulee’s Gold,” starring Peter Fonda, which tells the story of beekeepers who have harvested the world-famous Tupelo honey from the swamps of the Apalachicola River Basin for more than a century. That tradition is celebrated each spring during the Tupelo Honey Festival.
